Mussoorie

Referred to as 'Queen of Hills' and located 34 km from Dehradun at an altitude of 2500 mts, Mussoorie has been a preferred holiday resort since the time of the British Raj. The Mansur shrub that grows predominantly in this place has given this place the name Mussoorie. The shepherds let their cattle graze on this shrub and this place is still referred to as Mansoori by the local people. Mussoorie continues to remain a popular holiday spot and honeymoon destination. Pine-covered mountain slopes and snow clad peaks - experience the beauty of Mussoorie.



MUSSOORIE TRAVEL

There is an airport in the nearby Doon Valley. Dehradun is the nearest railway station and is about 34 kms from Mussoorie. Mussoorie enjoys pleasant weather throughout the year. April to June is summer, September to November is spring and the entire place is full of blossoms and this would be the right time to visit Mussoorie. There is also intermittent rainfall during December, the night temperatures dip to as low as zero degrees centigrade.


Places of interest in Mussoorie

Lal Tibba: This is the highest point in Mussoorie and is located in Landour area, which is considered the oldest occupied place in Mussoorie. The point is called Childer's lodge and travelers can reach this place either on horseback or by walk. The view this spot offers is exhilarating, in particular the view of the snow clad peaks. Travelers can stay either at luxurious accommodations or at budget hotels as per their convenience. The Mall is the biggest shopping place at Mussoorie and has the best to offer all travelers. Ladhaki shawls, wooden items, ceramic ware, Tibetan revolving wheels or Thangkas are famous here.


Mussoorie tourist attractions

Kempty falls: Located 13 km from Mussoorie, this place was developed as a tourist spot by John Mekinan.


Gun Hill: This is the second highest point of Mussoorie and you can experience nature at its scenic best. The place is so named, as it was the location where a gun was mounted and fired at mid afternoon so as to enable people to adjust their watches. The ropeway ride to this place is a thrilling experience.


Municipal Gardens: This was known as the Botanical garden of Mussoorie before Independence and is now also called the Company gardens. This garden was laid by the renowned Geologist, Dr.H.Fackner in the preceding century. It houses a small artificial lake and boating facilities are also available.


Nag-Devata Temple: The temple is located about 6 km from Mussoorie and the temple by itself is a beautiful place. The view from this spot is worth the visit.


Sir George Everest House: The park estate of Sir George Everest is located about 6 km away and is accessible by road. He was the first Surveyor General of India and had made this place his office and residence. Mount Everest, the highest peak of the World is named after him.


Other places of interest in and around Mussoorie include Mussoorie Lake, Van Chetna Kendra, Camel's back Road, Jharipani Falls, Jwalaji Temple and Bhatta Falls. Mussoorie also boasts of having the largest indoor skating rink in India.


Excursion trips from Mussoorie
  • Naga Tibba - The highest peak around Mussoorie is located around 55 km from here and forms an idyllic place for trekking. It is 10,000 feet high and is covered with dense forests.

  • Surkhanda Devi Temple - Situated at an altitude of 10,000 feet, this temple is 35 km from Mussoorie and anybody visiting this temple has to climb 2-km uphill to reach the temple.

  • Dhanaulti - Pine and deodar forests line this resort and it is located 25 km from Mussoorie. The natural aroma and the pristine atmosphere of this place is awesome.
