The Forts - Vijaydurg : Sindhudurg

Fort Victory or Vijaydurg is among the great naval forts built by Shivaji. This fort stands proudly as a proof of Maharashtra’s martial dominance during the reign of Shivaji. This fort was captured by Shivaji from the Kings of Bijapur and was converted into a major naval base. He strengthened this fort by building three lines of walls and various watch towers. The hollowed out entrance of the fort permits entry of 500 ton vessels.

Sindhudurg was built in a location that was personally selected by Shivaji. It is built off the Malvan coast. The construction of this fort started in 1664 and took three years to be completed. The strength of this fort was its inaccessibility. The fort is accessible between the two Islands of Padmaged and Dhontara through a narrow navigable canal.

Within the premises of the fort you can find the statue of Shivaji, the Great Maratha ruler along with his footprints and palm. This fort was also used as a naval base by the Maratha ruler. The Fort was rechristened as Fort Augustus by the British after they captured this Fort. Sindhudurg is also famous as the Ocean Fort.
